The Brandable Insider: Analyzing One Hundred Info-Tech Brands

Each year, Wealthfront, the automated investment service, releases a list of the most desirable, mid-sized tech companies. Wealthfront believes that the most important financial decision any young person can make is where they choose to work and launch their career. With this in mind, they publish an annual list of the info-tech companies most likely to turn into big business. In other words, the best of the best.

The list includes more than a hundred companies and is compiled by surveying 14 of the top venture capital firms such as Andreessen Horowitz, Benchmark, DAG Ventures, Greylock Partners, Lightspeed, Matrix Partners and Social Capital. The startup categories in the list cover everything from grocery delivery, e-commerce platforms, background checking services and video conferencing platforms to game development and 3D manufacturing.

Several months ago, Ycombinator published a list of its startups and I dissected it here at DN Geek. I thought I’d try to do that again with this 2017 list from Wealthfront.

First let’s categorize the company brands:

  • Double-letter brands (1) ie Automattic
  • Hybrid (10) ie DataStax
  • Invented (21) ie Bonobos
  • Keyword (91) ie ChartBoost

Next, let’s look at the keywords.

While the list contains many strong keywords like media, fund, nerd, labs, geek, square and mobile, those words only appear once. The most frequently used term is, networks, which appears on the list 6 times.

Other keywords that are used multiple times include:

  • App (2)
  • Blue (2)
  • Carbon (2)
  • Cloud (2)
  • Data (2)
  • Door (3)
  • Grid (2)
  • Health (2)
  • Logic (3)
  • Networks (6)
  • One (2)

Keep in mind that this is just a sampling of the startup and info-tech companies and this list may or may not accurately reflect naming trends throughout the entire industry. However, I do think it provides some valuable insights and keyword ideas for future brandable purchases.
