The Brandable Insider: How to Pick a Good 5L

Last week we talked about keyword synergy. Now you’re thinking…..hmmm what about those short names he was touting the week before? Okay, okay, I get it. It’s time for some detail on the short brandables. So I’ll write about 5Ls this week. To prepare I messaged a friend who owns several thousand 5Ls and asked: What makes a five letter domain a good brandable? The message came back with a single word: “pronounce-ability.” Well I guess my friend is long on wisdom but short on words (just like her domains). Meanwhile, I’ve got a whole page to fill so here’s my take on what makes a 5L domain valuable and sell-able.

Economic Inequality

There is a hierarchy for 5L brandables. Unlike the Gettysburg Address 5Ls weren’t created equal. Using sales from this past week as examples here’s some valuation guidelines.

  • Dictionary Words

This is the obvious one but I couldn’t resist. Five letter words can sell for several million dollars (Porno.com, Slots.com, Candy.com, Loans.com, Pizza.com etc.) or in the middle six figures depending on the strength of their commercial application. (Belly.com, Claim.com, Shoot.com, Niche.com, Track.com etc.)

  • Wordhacks

Some 5L brandables use three or four letter words with an add-on. Examples from this past week include: Podfy.com ($20), Jivey.com ($305), FirmX.com ($155) and ForBy.com ($1136)

  • Sound Familiar?

Others gain value because they emulate existing words or brands like Ximeo.com ($204) which sounds like Vimeo or Video. Or Teggo.com ($230) which sounds like Lego. Still others combine syllables and sounds from real words and create something unique with a familiar feel. As an example here are some 5Ls I own: Luxno.com, Xugro.com, Vitqo.com, Onzly.com and Geexo.com. Why is familiar so important? Because familiar sounds are much easier to spell and remember.

  • Trendy

Lastly there’s trends and fads. That’s an entire article unto itself. But one example from this week is short domains starting with Z. Existing startups include Zthru and Ztel and this week we saw sales like Zusee.com ($105) and Zyrax.com ($205) in the aftermarket.

An example of a 5L that I’d leave on the table would be Skyrm.com which sold this week for $105. It’s pronounceable, but to me, it’s not familiar sounding or easy to spell. Again, as I’ve said before brandables are subjective and when a domain gets down to five digits you can break a lot of rules and still have a sell-able domain. Six Letter Domains
Most of what I’ve said above applies to six letter domains as well. But keep in mind that as names lengthen, even by one character, the expectations get higher and the “rules” become more rigid. The reverse is true for 4Ls. Meanwhile, here’s a few nice six letter domains that sold this week:

  1. The perceived value of skyrm.com is probably only due to its close resemblance to ‘Skyrim’, the popular game series. Arguably a potential IP/TM violation and perhaps another reason it might have been avoided.
