68 newly funded startups and their domain names: Brillen.de, Netki.com, Mpb.com

The summer holiday is making it’s impact as we have a rather small list this week with just 68 startup companies that raised a combined $217,795,050 in venture funding last week. 63% of them is using a .com for their domain name with the ccTLD coming in second again with just under 18% this week. We have three startup on this weeks list that are using a new gTLD, one .Audio, one .Academy and a .Guru

Some name + domain name combos that i’d liked this week are from the German based Brillen.de, which is an online portal that enables users to find and purchase from an extensive range of glasses. As you probably guessed brillen means glasses in German. Just like in most other European countries, the ccTLD is the top choice when it comes to a domain name.  Next up we have fintech startup Netki, a leading provider of tools to foster the adoption of blockchain technology. A nice, short and very brandable name for which the company owns the matching .com Last but not least we have mpb.com, the leading marketplace in Europe for trading high-end cameras and lenses. The company was already founded a decade ago but just raised their first outside capital, a $2.77M series A round.

  1. Great post. A few things I noticed, all the .COM versions of the .io/.co/etc domains are already developed and in use by other companies or registered by individuals and not publicly listed for sale anywhere, this leads me to believe they couldn’t buy the .COM even if they wanted or tried to and they settled, all except Ossicles.audio, Ossicles.com is listed for sale through BuyDomains, although I don’t think Ossicles is on the top of their branding game as they didn’t even think to register OssiclesAudio.com as a defense like Somos.academy did, they own SomosAcademy.com and are using the .com version of their name for email communication (goes to show they acknowledged gTLDs will likely lead to email confusion).

      1. Yes, you right Doron. Blockchain wallet and identity innovators Netki has raised a $3.5 million seed funding round led by O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures (OATV). Also involved in the funding round was Donuts, Colle Capital, Husseini Group, Digital Currency Group, Tom Turney, Bitfinex, Plug and Play.

  2. Hadn’t heard of Brillen.de Doron, so thank you for putting it on this list.

Ordering prescription glasses online has become a big industry. OpticalOwl covers the online glasses market. We mainly do the North American market but we are working on expanding coverage to include sites all over the world. There are lots for ordering glasses online that people are not aware of these days.

Smart of them to use Brillen.de as that appeals to the Germany and Austria, where most of their customers are. Seems Brillen are using a lot of the funds for hiring new staff.
