Top 100 brandable domain name sales for 2017

Three years ago I compiled a list of the top 100 brandable domain name sales during 2014 which planted the seed for the weekly brandable sales posts on the highest, reported brandable domain name sales all throughout 20152016 and now 2017.  Based on more than 1000 reported brandables sales this year I have once again compiled a list of the top 100 brandable domain name sales for 2017.

The criteria for inclusion in the list remain the same as previous years.

  • No numeric domains
  • Dotcom only
  • No 2L & 3L domains (as they are a breed on their own)
  • No one-word dictionary domains (in any language). This means the sale of is not included for example as it’s the Spanish word for Hour.
  • Unless a word has an alternative spelling such as No 121 on the list,
  • No 4-letter acronyms unless they are pronounceable and used as a brand name instead of an acronym (many examples of those on this list!)
  • Two keyword domains can qualify. No 50,, for example, is a brandable domain name while would not have made this list.
  • Variation on words are allowed, such as No 55,

The 100 biggest sales this year account for $4,516,680 in sales compared to $3,343,894 in 2016, $3,168,440 in 2015 and $2,989,652 in 2014.

Uniregistry is once again the dominating sales venue claiming 47% of all sales on the list with as the runner-up, accounting for 26% of sales. Unfortunately, Afternic, GoDaddy, and niche marketplaces such as BrandBucket and do not share sales data and sales made through the Efty platform are private unless a seller decides to report a sale to DNJournal or NameBio.

Here’s this years list:

Please do keep in mind that these are the highest sales that have been reported on during 2015. This list is meant to help give you insights and is nowhere near complete as many sales are kept private and the major marketplaces specializing in brandable domains do not report any sales prices.

  1. Thanks Doron.

Time to adjust my price on my short brandables with potential .Few five figure sales and it’s 6 figures.I am sure there are few making these who are not even well known domainers.

    1. These sales are the exception, not the rule 🙂

The vast majority of brandables sell in the four-figure range. I have been at it for 4 years now and only closed two sales in the five-figure range to date.

  2. This is a very interesting list, it seems like all the brandable sub-criteria and styles are fairly well represented. It gives a good perspective on what end users actually want without being constrained by small budgets.

    I especially like the observation:

“The 100 biggest sales this year account for $4,516,680 in sales compared to $3,343,894 in 2016, $3,168,440 in 2015 and $2,989,652 in 2014.”

The top 100 reported sales seems like it would be statistically significant, and the observation indicates that steady growth over a few years has rather suddenly accelerated. 2017 was up a whopping 45 percent!

So this year should be extremely interesting to see if this trajectory continues or if 2017 was some kind of anomaly.

Thanks for these reports Doron, and thanks to Candace for her valuable reports too.

    1. The increase is mostly because of the sales last year. If you exclude that sales the total is only slightly higher than the previous year. Nonetheless, it was another solid year and I remain bullish on brandable domains – especially one-word dictionary words that make great brands like or (those sales are not included in this list).
