The Brandable Insider: Those CHIPs, This Dip and 5L Blip

Many expected five letter dot-coms (5L) to be the next big thing in the surging Chinese domain market. Folks on NamePros were counting down the days till the buyout. The assumption was that 5Ls, especially those with repeating letters and patterns, would rise exponentially in value once every 5L was regged. Unfortunately the 5L play was interrupted by a major, ongoing decline in the CHIP market. As a result, some domainers now see most 5Ls as being worth less than reg fee. Why then did Namebio report sales on more than sixty, 5L dot-coms this past week?

Behind the Numbers
At least one 5L sale appears to be a potential upgrade for an existing company, UDpay.com ($1769). Others seem to be valuable for their correlation to International stars and shows. These include an Indian actor, Aftab.com ($660), a Bosnian footballer, Jahic.com ($364) and a Japanese TV show, Unyil.com ($179). Still others seem to have value as words in other languages. For example Hokku.com ($1500), is Japanese for “starting verse” and Zodii.com ($141) is Romanian for “zodiac”. However, there were some 5L sales this past week that many would see as potential brandables for U.S. startups.

Let’s look at a few of them:

  • Dorki.com ($422) I bid on this one but my pockets weren’t deep enough.
  • InJet.com ($1250) This is the former cyber address of a members only, charter jet company in Florida.
  • Noxxo.com ($127) Yup. I was out bid on this one too. How noxious is that?
  • Padzo.com ($121) Launch pad? Rocket pad? Heat pad? Pen n’ pad?
  • Swaat.com ($120) Special police forces, Soil Water Assessment Tools and of course, flies.
  • Thash.com ($201) A play on thrash or hash? Helped out by a plug in DomainShane’s daily post.
  • Tutio.com ($165) An education (tutor) brand?
  • Wishe.com ($126) Estibot says that without the ‘e’ it’d be worth $312,000.
  • Xuave.com ($108) Charming hack of the word: suave
  • Zhoes.com ($160) Estibot puts Shoes.com at a cool $5.5 million. Let’s hope nobody thinks it’s pronounced Z-Hoes 🙂

    1. my positive experience with 5L:

      like in stock market,
It all depend on when you enter the market,
a lot of people come late and expect to buy at 300$ a 5L and resell it for a few thousands,
that’s a though position to be

for the record: all 5L are not equal: XXyXX is worth much more than regfee

i was lucky to see the trend early,
and found around 30 premiums 5L, that i handreg last year
      i sold them between 150$ and 270$ within 6months
that was nice, some early guys got a hundreths of these domains at regfee

Now investors assume that it all started in 2015,
and that is far from the truth,
when i checked on archive dot org, i found out some of these domains were registered as early as 2005
