The Ultimate Guide: How to Sell a Domain Name

Many of us have the habit of registering a domain name whenever we have a great (or not so great) idea for a new startup company, product, project, blog or side-business. But those ideas often remain just that, an idea. And the domain name will end up sitting dormant in your registrar account for months, years or even decades alongside an often growing family of other, unused domain names. These domain names don’t have to stay dormant; starting up a business is incredibly scary, but achievable.

Other reasons for owning unused domain names could be that you retired from or closed a business, decided to stop updating your blog or personal site or you acquired other companies over the years, with their domains. If so, you’re probably wondering if these domains are worth anything to someone else and if yes, how you can sell your domain names?

How to sell a domain name?

In this post, I will guide you through all the different steps in the process of successfully selling a domain name. From valuation to pricing, marketing, listing, negotiating and closing a sale with a safe and secure way to transfer the domain name to its new owner and the seller (that will be you) receiving payment. You can use the links below to jump to a specific section.

The Brandable Insider: The Secret Path to Profits (Part II)

“Don’t be romantic about your domains. Don’t fall in love with them. You’re not a collector of domain names, you’re an investor.”Michael Cyger at DNAcademy

Last week we talked about money management and its crucial impact on our success as domainers. Small changes in money management can make or break our business. One of the biggest mistakes we make as domainers is renewing domains that have little chance of selling in the next one or two years.

If you had zero end user sales last year then renewals will likely take you further into the hole. If you had a few sales then renewals can still significantly erode your profits. So it’s a fine line to walk.

Brandable domain name sales week 44:,,

It was a fantastic week for brandable domain name sales with six sales in the five-figure range. We would have our first ever seven-figure brandable sale to report if Vivo wasn’t the Spanish word for Alive. The sale of was discovered and reported by George Kirikos on Twitter this weekend. As Elliot Silver reports the domain name was owned by RealNetworks, Inc and is now owned by Vivo Mobile Communication Co., Ltd in China which paid $2.1 million for the domain name.

Leading the chart this week is the sale of which was sold by Mike Mann his DomainMarket for a sweet $17,000. Another interesting sale was that of for $8,756 at Sedo which shows the trend for double letters continues. Names I like on this list include,, and

Brandable domain name sales week 22.

It was a great week for brandable domain name sales as we can report the second 6 figure sale of the year with selling for a cool $132,500. It is the highest reported brandable domain name sale of the year so far and it has all the characteristics of a great brandable. The buyer is Mera Software Services and is an upgrade from the url. We have a couple of other large sales with and both fetching 5 figures on Sedo. Alternative spellings are hot at the moment with going for $6,652 on DropCatch and pulling in $5,999 at auction site Flippa. Other names I like on this list are, and

Brandable domain name sales week 20.

It was a bit of a slow week for brandable domain name sales compared to last week but there are quite a few names on this list that I really like. which went for $6,278 at Sedo is a very cool brand and already developed into what seems to be a Turkish social site with a Pinterest inspired UX. Another two word brandable that I like from this list is which also sold at Sedo for $4,000. I like animal inspired brand names and have successfully sold a few of them in a similar price range such as, and My favourite name on the list this week is which fetched $3,175 on auction site NameJet. Although it might seem on the high side for a NameJet buy I still believe there’s plenty of room for a solid ROI as I would personally price this name in the low five figure range when offering it for sale. took $2,500 on Flippa when someone hit the BIN button and I think it’s a terrific deal for the buyer. I own a few two word brandables ending with King but none as good as this one.
